Understand Zakat

A short guide before you give

What is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — a yearly, obligatory purification of wealth. A fixed share of qualifying assets is given to those entitled to receive it, keeping wealth in circulation and cleansing what remains.

Who must pay Zakat?

Every adult Muslim of sound mind whose net Zakatable wealth stays at or above the nisab for one full lunar year. If you are below the nisab, Zakat is not due this year.

Zakat rate

2.5% (one-fortieth) of your net Zakatable wealth on your Zakat date. Trade goods, cash, gold, silver and receivables are all valued at their current worth, not their cost.

Zakat year (Hawl)

Zakat is due once one lunar year (Hawl) passes over wealth that was at nisab. Fix a Hijri date — many choose Ramadan — and calculate on that same date every year.

Common mistakes

Forgetting business stock and raw materials; leaving out savings, committee/BC pools and digital wallets; valuing gold by weight only and ignoring its karat; and deducting long-term loans in full instead of just the instalment due this year.

Zakat — common questions

How much Zakat do I pay?

Zakat is 2.5% of the qualifying (Zakatable) wealth you have held for one lunar year, provided the total is at or above the nisab threshold.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes Zakat due. It equals the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver at current prices. Many scholars advise using the silver value so that more of the poor benefit.

Which assets are Zakatable?

Cash and bank balances, gold and silver, money owed to you that you expect to recover, business stock and merchandise, and investments held for resale. Personal-use items such as your home, car and household goods are not Zakatable.

Can I give my Zakat to Fikr-e-Akhirat Welfare Foundation?
